Barley Flakes
I chose organic whole grain barley flakes due to their combination of a chewy texture, subtle nutty flavour and naturally their nutrient density.
Barley offers the following vitamins and minerals:
Thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium.
There are many studies showing the benefits of barley in whole grain form may be beneficial for lowering cholesterol, reduction in heart disease, helping protect against diabetes and colon cancer.
Barley is a particularly rich source of fibre, and minerals molybdenum, manganese and selenium.
Barley flakes also contain good levels of copper, vitamin B1, chromium, phosphorus, magnesium and niacin
Like oats, barley also contains the soluble fibre beta-glucan. This type of soluble fibre has been shown to reduce hunger and slows the digestion and absorption of nutrients as the fibre forms a gel like substance in the gut.
The majority of the fibre contained in barley is of the insoluble type, which does not dissolve in water. Insoluble fibre bulks out your stool and increases intestinal movement which may reduce problems with constipation.
