Our Ingredients And Why We Chose Them

When I put together the original formula for Growli, a lot of time was invested into researching the finest most nutritionally beneficial ingredients and from the most sustainable sources. It was also of high importance to see that these ingredients were sourced from organic suppliers, tested for heavy metals and pesticides.

The aim has always been to put as much nutritional quality into one serving as possible. So even if you only manage just one Growli per day, you’ve still consumed more quality micronutrients and macronutrients than pretty much anything else on the market, within in the same amount of calories.

The creation of Growli was never profit driven. If it were, it would have a quarter of the ingredients, not include organic ingredients and have a heap of fake flavouring and sugar to mask the lack of quality components. I simply wanted the best and only the best.

Sourcing organic ingredients was a high priority for us as a company, when a product consists of some much whole grain material it makes perfect sense to choose organic sources to avoid all those harmful pesticides and chemicals commonly used in food production. Avoiding any potential contamination from these chemicals was a high priority for us.

We work very closely with a small number of suppliers to ensure the ingredients we use meet our standards and to source produce from locations with low toxin and heavy metal levels. Our team often conducts onsite visits to our suppliers, to see how our raw materials are processed and packaged.

It is fair to say we have a good working relationship with our suppliers, they understand our aims, our specifications and are more than happy to work with us to push the standards of quality further.

Milk Protein

Milk protein is simply the gold standard for protein supplementation, our high purity blend of casein and whey blend packs in the complete range of nine essential amino acids and very low lactose levels, less than 0.7 grams per serving of Growli.

Whey is well studied and held in high regard with those trying build or maintain lean mass Highly absorbable, easily digested by the majority of users and offers a nice satiety effect. Whey has been shown to reliably increase muscle protein synthesis.

We have complemented the whey with micellar casein to boost our amino acid profile of our muesli further still. Casein another complete protein is a very slow digesting keeping you full for hours and providing you with a steady drip feed of amino acids for up to 7 hours.

Casein also produces a lovely creamy almost pudding like texture. It is one of the reasons why Growli has such great texture in the mouth.

These two milk proteins offer a different rate of digestion and absorption, whey typically digests within 2-3 hours, casein up to 7 hours thus creating far more flexibility with meal timing, helping to tide you over from breakfast, fuelling your pre workout, for repair in your post workout meals and full during the night.

Our trials have shown that this blend of proteins types offers the most satisfactory balance between satiety and performance, allowing our customers to Growli at any time of day. You also benefit from a superior essential amino acid profile with a rich source of BCAA’s. So there’s no need to buy isolated BCAA’s. Our milk protein whilst supplied via superb diaries in the EU, from grass fed cows.

Oats

Oats have been consumed for generations and their health benefits have been extolled for equally as long. A fabulous nutritionally dense low calorie food, a good source of vitamins and minerals, proteins, low gi carbohydrates, fibre, phytonutrients and inherently low in fat.

We have chosen to use oats extensively in our muesli formula. After all, what would a muesli be without oats? A crying shame that’s what, because the health benefits of oats are worth admiring; high amounts of antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds called polyphenols including a type called avenanthramides which almost only come from oats.

Oats are also a great source of soluble fibre including a type called beta-glucan which is purported to reduce cholesterol, reduce blood sugar levels and help improve gut bacteria.

Oats are widely studied for their health benefits and results have shown that oats do lower cholesterol levels, may help prevent type 2 diabetes and boost your immune system.

Now we could have just stuck some oat flour in there, but where would the fun be in that? Growli is all about texture, bite and chew. So we have multi sizes of oats, oat meal and oat bran included in specific ratios for a great bout of mouth pleasure.

Oats are naturally high in many vitamins and minerals including:

Manganese, phosphorus, copper, thiamine, iron, selenium, magnesium, zinc.

Please note our oats are not classified as gluten free as they may have been grown or packaged in an environment where gluten containing crops were present.

Barley Flakes

I chose organic whole grain barley flakes due to their combination of a chewy texture, subtle nutty flavour and naturally their nutrient density.

Barley offers the following vitamins and minerals:

Thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium.

There are many studies showing the benefits of barley in whole grain form may be beneficial for lowering cholesterol, reduction in heart disease, helping protect against diabetes and colon cancer.

Barley is a particularly rich source of fibre, and minerals molybdenum, manganese and selenium.

Barley flakes also contain good levels of copper, vitamin B1, chromium, phosphorus, magnesium and niacin

Like oats, barley also contains the soluble fibre beta-glucan. This type of soluble fibre has been shown to reduce hunger and slows the digestion and absorption of nutrients as the fibre forms a gel like substance in the gut.

The majority of the fibre contained in barley is of the insoluble type, which does not dissolve in water. Insoluble fibre bulks out your stool and increases intestinal movement which may reduce problems with constipation.

Wheat Flakes

Whole grain organic malted wheat flakes are included in Growli muesli, not only for the delicious taste, chewy texture and natural sweetness, but also because of whole grain wheats inherent nutritional qualities.

Our organic wheat is a useful source of selenium, copper, phosphorus, manganese and folate.

Whole grain wheat is also highly digestible and absorbable so has a different GI rating to the other organic grains within Growli.

Useful for a more rapid source of energy pre or post workout. Simply prepare a bowl of Growli muesli and hour before your workout with an optional choice of fresh or frozen fruits to create an awesome, nutritious and power packed pre workout meal.

Whole grain wheat packs in plenty of fibre, most of which is insoluble and excellent for keeping us full for longer.

And like all of our organic cereal grains, we only use the finest available from UK based suppliers, transported direct for blending and packaging.

Coconut Chips

We added coconut chips not only because they add a beautiful flavour and texture to our super muesli formula; don’t worry we haven’t overpowered the flavours with too much coconut.

Our organic coconut also provides a healthy supply of quality fats in the form of medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s) and saturated fat, we all need (some) saturated fat in our diet.

Medium chain triglycerides are processed within the body differently than normal fats and are more often than not treated as an instant form of fuel and potentially less likely to be stored as body fat.

Coconut is a source of the following minerals:

Manganese, selenium, copper, phosphorus, potassium, iron, zinc

The texture, fibre and natural sweetness of coconut was also a welcome addition to Growli, greatly reducing the need for additional sweeteners and keeping one full for longer.

Chia Seeds

These organic gluten free whole grain seeds are packed full of useful vitamins and minerals and boast an impressive level of antioxidants, which researchers suggest have very positive health benefits.

It is fair to say many would class this tiny seed as a super food and who are we to disagree? Just look at them, they are packed with  the nutritonal properties we can all benefit from.

They are also packed full of fibre, in fact almost all of the carbohydrate in chia seeds comes in the form of soluble fibre. Fibre is excellent for your gut bacteria, helping to keep it well fed and healthy.

Chia seeds are a source of:

Calcium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, niacin, potassium, thiamine, riboflavin.

Chia are also a fabulous source of plant based omega 3 essential fatty acids, a nutrient often lacking from many modern diets. We have obviously packed in plenty of omega 3 into Growli.

Flax Seeds

Organic flax seeds are widely regarded as one of the most useful and healthful seeds. A good source of omega 3 fat, protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals, these seeds are also very tasty (we use brown flaxseed) for their nutty flavour.

Flax seeds are also a good source of lignans. Lignans are plant derived compounds that have antioxidant and oestrogen properties, both of which may help lower the risk of cancer and improve health.

Flax seeds are a useful source of omega 3 fatty acids, thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium.

In Growli we only used quality organic cracked flaxseeds, these are much easier to digest than regular whole flaxseeds. None of the goodness is lost, just easier of the gut and better nutrient absorption.

One of the great things about organic flaxseeds is that they genuinely taste good, they add a subtle nutty flavour which combines so smoothly with our vanilla tones.

So as you can see flaxseeds offer so much: flavour, texture, omega 3 efa’s, fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals; pretty awesome really!

Goji Berry Powder

Goji berries are a healthy source of vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, vitamin A, iron, zinc and antioxidants.

Goji berries also include all eight essential amino acids, which is just one of the reasons we added this berries to our formulation.

Goji berries have high levels of antioxidants, especially zeaxanthin which gives the berry its bright colour.

Studies suggest that the nutrients contained within Goji berries may offer significant health benefits.

They may for example, help protect the eyes, provide immune system support, offer some protection against cancers, promote a more healthy skin, work on stabilising blood sugar, may boost mood and aid reduction in liver damage.

Himalayan Pink Salt

This pink coloured salt is had extracted from the Khewra salt mine near the Himalayas in Pakistan. It is said that pink Himalayan salt contains up 84 minerals and trace elements; it is the iron which creates the pink colour.

We add a small amount of salt to our Growli formula just a little extra flavour, not too much nor too little.

Our Himalayan pink salt is ethically sourced through a UK basee supplier who have been agents for this product for years.

Pre Biotic Fibre

Pre-biotic foods are high in special types of dietary fibre that have been shown to support digestive health by feeding the friendly bacteria in your gut.

Foods that contain pre-biotic fibre promote the increase of friendly beneficial micro organisms such as bacteria in our gut, and can help with various digestive problems and even boost your immune system.

Pre-biotics in the gastrointestinal tract can alter the composition of organisms in the gut microbiome.

Consuming pre-biotic fibre containing foods raw is the best way to obtain this useful type of fibre without any alterations from the cooking process.

In Growli we include the following pre-biotic fibre sources: beta-glucan from barley and oats, inulin from chicory root, insoluble fibre from flaxseeds (cellulose and lignins), arabinoxylan oligosaccharides AXOS fibre from wheat bran.
